Konsep Bit Torrent

One analogy to describe this process might be to visualize a group of people sitting at a table. Each person at the table can both talk and listen to any other person at the table. These people are each trying to get a complete copy of a book. Person A announces that he has pages 1-10, 23, 42-50, and 75. Persons C, D, and E are each missing some of those pages that A has, and so they coordinate such that A gives them each copies of the pages he has that they are missing. Person B then announces that she has pages 11-22, 31-37, and 63-70. Persons A, D, and E tell B they would like some of her pages, so she gives them copies of the pages that she has. The process continues around the table until everyone has announced what they have (and hence what they are missing.)

The people at the table coordinate to swap parts of this book until everyone has everything. There is also another person at the table, who we'll call 'S'. This person has a complete copy of the book, and so doesn't need anything sent to him. He responds with pages that no one else in the group has. At first, when everyone has just arrived, they all must talk to him to get their first set of pages. However, the people are smart enough to not all get the same pages from him. After a short while they all have most of the book amongst themselves, even if no one person has the whole thing. In this manner, this one person can share a book that he has with many other people, without having to give a full copy to everyone that's interested. He can instead give out different parts to different people, and they will be able to share it amongst themselves. This person who we've referred to as 'S' is called a seed in the terminology of BitTorrent.

Penjelasan Istilah yang Sering Digunakan:
Tracker = tempat dimana kita bisa mendownload file .torrent
Seeder / UL = orang yang mempunyai file tersebut secara utuh dan membiarkan orang lain mendownload darinya.
Peer / leecher / DL = orang yang sedang mendownload file tersebut, baik dari seeder ataupun dari sesama leecher.
Availability = ketersediaan file tersebut di internet, dapat berubah-ubah tiap waktu. Apabila availabilty sebuah file adalah < 1, maka kemungkinan besar kita tidak akan bisa mendownlaod file tersebut secara utuh, kecuali kalau ada orang yang bersedia untuk me-“seed” file itu lagi.
Share Ratio = ratio download dan upload kita, karena ini adalah sharing community, maka diharapkan share ratio untuk sebuah file tidak kurang dari 1, jadi artinya misal kita telah mendownload file sebesar 100Mb, maka kita diharapkan juga untuk me-“share” file tersebut minimal 100Mb juga, jadi take and give, bukan cuma take and go. Secara teori, apabila semua orang yang mendownload memakai torrent menerapkan hal ini, file tersebut akan ada selamanya di internet, dan orang bisa mendapatkannya di setiap waktu. Kalo orangnya egois, "Ah, gue udah dapet lengkap gini, gue caow aja. Ngapain juga gue share lagi," ya udah. One day komunitas ini akan mati. Nahhh... familiar ga sih dengan habit ini?

Keuntungan Menggunakan Bit Torrent
1. Download cepat, tergantung jumlah seeder dan user yang online
2. Dapat memperoleh file yg tidak tersedia di browser site, termasuk MP3, film/movie, dan cr@<k software.

Kelemahan Menggunakan Bit Torrent utk Dial-up Connection
1. Harus berbagi file (upload dan download) tidak bisa hanya mendownload... walaupun perbandingan (DL:UL) bisa disetting/diakali pada beberapa jenis Bit Torrent.
2. Tidak bisa download file lebih dari 3, kecuali punya upload speed yg besar.
Bayangkan, 1 file download, kita mesti upload  sekitar 2-3 Kbyte/s, jika ada 2 file yg didownload berarti musti upload another 3 Kbyte/s which means sekitar 6 Kbyte/s. buat dialup user. Upload segini udah ngos2an, mungkin udah ga bisa browsing.
PS: Pada beberapa jenis Torrent terbaru (update) sebenarnya hal ini sudah diatasi: bisa lancar browsing saat DL. Tapi jika kita browsing maka koneksi Torrent cenderung terputus (lebih mengutamakan browser daripada BT). Prinsipnya browsing kontinu akan merusak proses DL lewat BT.
3. Hanya file2 baru yang available untuk didownload, jarang ada file2 yang rare karena prinsipnya lebih banyak user yg mencari file baru
4. File2nya biasanya hanya bertahan sekitar 1 bulan, karena biasanya seedernya sudah tidak share file lagi (semakin sedikit). Jadi harus keep up-to-date dgn file2 torrent.

Berikut adalah contoh DL .torrent menggunakan BitSpirit. Bit Spirit merupakan satu Torrent Client baru yg memberikan option cukup lengkap (walau kalah lengkap dari Azureus), termasuk untuk koneksi dial-up. Kemampuannya menambah tracker selain tracker built in .torrent, juga menambah nilai lebih pada Client Torrent ini.

Itu adalah top speed yg dicapai pada Matrix dan nggak selalu stabil/steady. Biasanya jika jumlah seednya sedikit, speed DL paling sekitar 1-2 Kbyte/sec. Jika jumlah seed cukup banyak (>10), maka speed DL biasanya steady di 2 Kbyte/sec.
